Positive impact of MicroStation V8 on corporate-wide productivity

CLEARWATER, FL, USA — Is it possible that the decision not to upgrade to MicroStation V8 could have an adverse effect on the way you do business? Are there enough productivity improvements to convince your firm to move to V8 or to confirm that you made the right decision to migrate from V7? Most of us have wrestled with these insecurities. Some remain in the struggle.

Adopting MicroStation V8 at your company could save your firm big bucks in the long run..

When discussing productivity in the work place, a distinction must be made between personal and corporate levels. At a personal level, features that automate repetitive tasks or functions that reduce procedural steps all improve individual productivity.

However, we shouldn’t assume that personal productivity improvements automatically have a positive impact on corporate productivity. Until now, incremental enhancements to MicroStation meant we only had better design tools. That is, until the release of V8.

Tools for mixing MicroStation and AutoCAD files
V8 extends the interoperability between DWG and DGN formats, allowing the files to be accessed and shared without translations. DWG files, from Release 11 to 2004, may be attached as references or opened natively as a design. While opened in V8, the DWG mode is activated to secure the integrity of the file, disabling any feature or function incompatible with AutoCAD. Changes made in AutoCAD to the original DWG file are automatically displayed in V8 when opened or attached as a reference.

How does this impact your corporate productivity? It insures that your firm’s intellectual capital is not locked to a single file format. V8 allows firms to work seamlessly with AutoCAD vendors, suppliers and consultants that may not be familiar with MicroStation.

Operational Features
Among the most notable MicroStation enhancements, Design History leads the list of improvements geared towards increasing the productivity of designers, especially when having to undo work and when going back to previous revisions of a drawing.

Once activated, Design History records all the activities performed inside a design. These modifications are stored, named, time stamped and assigned to a specific user. Design History may be used to roll back projects to previous revisions, or to move forward to other proposed revisions, to permanently revert to a different revision of a project or to make temporary changes for tasks, such as, producing plots.

How can this impact your corporate productivity? For the first time, you can roll back to different stages of any project at any time. V8 allows you to visually confirm which stage of history to restore. With V7, you either searched for existing project files or restored backup files. Either process required additional time to confirm the correct files were restored.

These are just some of the many enhancements, that once your firm adopts them, you could significantly streamline your design workflow.
