Extensive surveys of CAD managers show that increased training would increase productivity in nearly all of MicroStation shops. Whether to train new staff or just fill in expertise gaps, efficient delivery of training is in high demand.

LearningBay is a complete, cost-effective learning management system for MicroStation shops that want to increase the effectiveness of their training, while dramatically decreasing the cost of delivering that training:

  • As an online solution, LearningBay was designed with ease of use and speed of implementation in mind. LearningBay is far less expensive than classroom training. Once installed, a course may be delivered over and over again, to hundreds of users for a single, low price.

  • LearningBay includes the ability to test and evaluate the skills of users. Further, it automatically builds remedial content to correct the deficiencies found by testing. This testing feature is particularly useful for evaluating new applicants for CAD positions.

  • Student enrollments, progress and test scores are stored as permanent records, a great source for managers and instructors to evaluate their departmental learning activities.

New learning environment
In each LearningBay course, students will find a unique and interactive learning environment like no book or classroom. Unlike a book, the student can do hands-on drills in each lesson, with movies, audio and interactive multimedia presentations. Unlike a classroom, each student can progress at their own pace, ensuring they fully understand each section before moving on. And, of course, they can come back and review as often as desired.

Benefits and Advantages
MicroStation courses are presented via a Web browser, allowing students to connect to LearningBay on their own schedule and train at their own pace:

  • Axiom provides interactive MicroStation and GEOPAK courses that allow users to see drop down menus, or watch a process happening, without leaving the training application. Interactive courses add interest and improve retention of material because students are directly involved and "interacting" with the material.

  • LearningBay optionally provides authoring tools for easily capturing, creating and organizing course content. Content can be created from Word documents, web pages and other sources. Companies can customize any course very quickly.

  • Consider customizing our courseware. Our courses are broken up into discrete units, each covering one specific aspect of MicroStation or GEOPAK. CAD managers can easily modify these units to include proprietary knowledge and procedures.

  • Someone with no HTML experience can be taught how to modify content, add content and author courses with a one-day training session.

  • In addition to the lesson text, courses are loaded with illustrations and diagrams and hands-on virtual environments that allow users to practice skills learned, without having to load MicroStation.

Distribution of knowledge and content
Once it is created, course content needs to be efficiently distributed to the people who need it. LearningBay offers various options that allow content creators to flexibly deploy their content. For example, instructors can assign pre-requisites for each course; administrators can automatically assign enrollment based on staffing groups; and instructors can setup enrollment for courses as “open” or “restricted”, the latter requiring instructor approval before allowing entry. LearningBay can also alert students to their new enrollments and encourage communications between instructors and students via e-mail.

Testing and evaluating knowledge gained
To confirm that learning programs and instruction are effective, instructors must evaluate how well students comprehend the information in courses. “Pop-tests” give each student feedback on how they are doing as they progress through the course content. Exams can be given in the “closed-book” or “open-book” mode for formal evaluation and permanent record keeping. With LearningBay’s help, administrators and instructors have a permanent record of the courses taken by students and can see detailed or summarized testing information. Testing records are ideal verification for tracking required state or federal training and making certain required training records are accurate and current.

Users familiar with previous versions of MicroStation will find the six units in this course filled with insights, simulations, examples and test evaluations.

To view the V8 Users Update course outline, click on the tab at the top of the page that says "V8 User Update".

V8 Admin Update
This course is designed specifically for administrators managing CAD departments using MicroStation V8. In-depth discussions — particularly of interest to managers — are the focus throughout. There are several units taken from the V8 Users Update course are included to help managers understand changes inside key areas of V8, such as named levels, models and plotting.

GEOPAK Training Libraries

GEOPAK Beginning Road Library
Axiom's GEOPAK training courses, written by seasoned GEOPAK professionals, are designed to make any GEOPAK user as proficient as they can be.

GEOPAK Intermediate Road Library
GEOPAK Intermediate Road library is the complete training library that trains new roadway designers on the road design process from start to finish. In six in-depth courses, GEOPAK Intermediate Road library trains students on design and earthwork for roadways, as well as, how to create plots of their roadway designs.

GEOPAK Advanced Road Library
GEOPAK Advanced Road library is the training library that trains roadway designers to design more complex roadways. In three in-depth courses, GEOPAK Advanced Road library provides students with the skills to use additional tools and options in GEOPAK that enable the user to complete a wide variety of road projects such as divided highways and freeway projects.

GEOPAK Site Library
GEOPAK Site library is the complete training library that trains designers on land development and site design. In nine courses, GEOPAK Site library trains students how modeler works, and apply it to the design and analysis of a complete site project. This includes the site layout, horizontal and vertical geometry development, final site plan sheets and quantity take-offs.

GEOPAK Survey Library
GEOPAK Survey library covers creating, editing and modifying survey data so it can be used by other project team members. The GEOPAK Survey library is composed of five comprehensive courses that cover surveying tasks for any type of site. Right from their own desks, students will become proficient in field collection, processing data and drawing into MicroStation files. By completing this library, the survey data can be used by others in the project team such as those in design.

GEOPAK Drainage Library
GEOPAK Drainage Library covers the accurate design or modification of storm drainage systems required for site development. The GEOPAK Drainage library discusses comprehensive drainage tools, including on-screen watershed analysis, ponding elevations and routing calculations, with great illustrations and videos. Upon completion of this library the student will be able to effectively design a storm drainage system for new sites. Also, students learn to expand upon a selected network by modifying relationship and surface models while still maintaining the system's original design intent.

GEOPAK Criteria Library
GEOPAK Criteria library trains users to create or modify the criteria to produce project-specific cross sections of the proposed design. By doing all the courses in GEOPAK Criteria library, a user will become proficient at using the tools needed to create cross-sections, compute Earthwork and create PlanSets (paper or electronic copy of the plans and specifications for a project that a contractor bids on).

GEOPAK PowerCivil Library
GEOPAK PowerCivil library covers using Bentley's GEOPAK PowerCivil for dynamic modification of data in site development. The GEOPAK PowerCivil library introduces using Bentley's unique civil engineering solution that streamlines workflow and automatically updates data as it is modified. The five courses discuss coordinate geometry, relationship modeling and exploring design modifications with coworkers, contractors and clients. Students will learn about the relationship modeling capabilities that enable dynamic exploration of site development scenarios according to the varying design options.
