Translations Between DWG and DGN Done Right the First Time: Now for Everyone!

Micro E - dwg to dgn

Translation Manager has for many years helped MicroStation users get translations between DGN and DWG done right the first time. With the latest release of Translation Manager, those AutoCAD 2010 or later users who don’t have access to MicroStation V8 can now get the help they need with translations between DGN and DWG even if they don’t have a copy of MicroStation. Let’s face it, translating files using MicroStation’s or AutoCAD’s built-in translator alone often creates output files that are just — messy! Someone, most likely you, has to spend hours fixing each file after the translation is done. In some cases, it almost seems faster to just recreate the CAD files from scratch, rather than trying to find and correct all the problems encountered.

For years, both MicroStation and AutoCAD users have been clamoring for a better way to do translations. Some of the more common types of problems with translated files include fonts that don’t map correctly, problems with element or entity symbology (such as incorrect line styles or linetypes, line weights or color), incorrect units in the output files causing unwanted size or coordinate geometry problems, special characters (such as degree symbols) that display wrong, and unwanted levels (MicroStation) or layers (AutoCAD) you can’t seem to get rid of.
What Else Can Go Wrong with Translations?

Figure 1. Tired of losing time or missing deadlines due to wrestling with translated CAD files? Translation Manager easily handles many problems that translations often create. It can drop or explode complex elements without losing tag or block attribute information, compress/purge unused items in either DGN or DWG files and modify your translated files so they meet CAD standards.

The list is a lot longer than you might expect but here are some of the more common issues:

  • Phantom elements that do not display but cause the “fit” or “zoom extents” commands to reduce the whole design to a dot.
  • Special characters like the degree symbol, diameter symbol or the plus/minus symbol that display the wrong character in the translated file.
  • Lots of unused levels/layers, cells/blocks, line styles, text styles and dimension styles that need to be compressed or purged.
  • Missing graphic elements.
  • In MicroStation files, the color table and the view attributes are not the way the CAD standard requires.

Translation Manager also provides a complete set of tools to repair, drop or explode, compress and modify the translated files, in a batch process, to handle these and many other problems that were not possible to correct during the translation.

Save Time by Cutting Out Tedious Tasks
If you’ve ever had to clean up translated files, you know the kind of messes that can happen and how much time it takes to fix them. Translation Manager provides users with a complete process for conducting translations that come out exactly as intended — ensuring clients and bosses are happy. It can do this by:

  • Correctly evaluating and preparing your AutoCAD or MicroStation files for translation.
  • Correctly configuring and translating those same files using the right settings.
  • Repairing, compressing and modifying the translated files.

The Proof is in the Pudding
“The majority of our projects have AutoCAD deliverables and have to be translated from MicroStation to AutoCAD. We could never accomplish this without Translation Manager. Can’t do without it.”
