Imports Into Revit: Rolling Heavy Rocks Uphill or Rock & Roll?
If importing Word documents or Excel spreadsheets into Revit® drives you nuts, and fixing the formatting leaves you feeling like you’re breaking rocks in a prison yard, then you’ll be able to relate to the plight of old Sisyphus.
Poor old Sisyphus displeased the gods and was sentenced to roll a rock to the top of the hill every day, just to watch it roll all the way back down again. Time is something we all wish we had more of, and, quite understandably, you don’t want to have to struggle with your imports or spend hours performing the same task over and over again. It just starts feeling too much like you’re rolling that rock up the proverbial hill. Sometimes, it seems unavoidable when those imports never come out quite how you want them to.
The formatting tripped and fell over itself on its way into Revit.
Sisyphus was being punished by the gods for impertinence and trickery. We’re assuming you haven’t done anything of the sort, so why should you suffer? Why are you having to comb through every page you imported to make sure it looks okay? Why are you spending hours fixing the formatting mess, manually, when you’ve got more important things to do?
The formatting tripped and fell over itself on its way into Revit and you’re stuck with the chaos. The fonts are wrong. The column headers are wrecked. Row heights are squashed and it’s going to eat up hours of your time to straighten it all out. It’s like being at the top of the hill and sadly waving goodbye as the rock rolls back down to the bottom. It’s a facepalm moment, one page at a time, at best.
You stand there knowing that you’re going to have to trudge back down the hill and get that rock in motion again. The mere idea is exhausting. You may even be taking your wallet out of your pocket at this point and looking at that small picture of your family, who you vaguely remember seeing sometime before you started this particular job.
The Iroquois talk about Gahongas or “rock rollers,” and if you can invoke their help, maybe they can roll those rocks for you that you currently find yourself shouldering up the hill all day long. If not, you’re going to need an alternative.
